1.1 Overall Gameplay Philosophy

The surface component of Project Schwarzwald should provide meaningful freedom without losing its survival-horror identity.

The player may choose how to approach installations, which routes to travel, when to use vehicles, whether to explore dangerous areas, and how to respond to military encounters.

The environment should reward preparation and observation.

Vehicles are valuable but finite.

Military personnel are individuals rather than disposable enemies.

Creatures threaten multiple factions.

Documents reveal historical relationships between installations.

Optional exploration can produce practical advantages and substantial narrative discoveries.

The geography should remain internally coherent.

Every road, bunker, warehouse, railway, utility tunnel, and auxiliary facility must have an understandable historical or operational purpose.

The larger objective is not simply to create a large open map.

It is to create the impression of an enormous classified military-scientific installation that existed, developed, expanded, suffered a catastrophe, and continued to affect the surrounding region long after its original purpose was lost.

Project Schwarzwald is not a collection of disconnected levels. It is a single historical, geographical, technological, and military ecosystem.

The surface tells the story of the installation's growth and eventual decline.

The underground levels reveal the scientific ambitions and catastrophes concealed beneath it.

Together, they form one continuous and interconnected world.
