1. Summary
The acoustic animal deterrent is a portable device developed by D3's animal-behaviour researchers. It emits a high-frequency acoustic signal designed to discourage approaching animals, and it can influence Cancer Dogs and potentially Roach Rats, but it never guarantees safety.
2. Origin
Certain researchers in D3's veterinary research facilities developed an acoustic device intended to influence the movement of experimental animals. Originally, the system was used to encourage animals to leave restricted areas or move between containment sections. The device is documented in the ward's animal behavior research records.
3. Nature and Properties
The device emits a high-frequency acoustic signal designed to discourage approaching animals. It can influence the behavior of Cancer Dogs and potentially Roach Rats.
3.1 Unreliable Effect
The device is not completely reliable. Its effectiveness depends on the animal's internal state:
- A frightened dog might retreat.
- A curious dog may hesitate and investigate.
- A highly aggressive, severely distressed, or cornered animal may ignore the device and continue approaching or attacking.
The device cannot guarantee safety. It therefore functions as an additional behavioral tool rather than a universal enemy-disable mechanism.
3.2 Limitations
Its battery or operational limitations should remain consistent with the game's resource-management philosophy.
4. History and Custody
A portable version of the system remains somewhere inside the veterinary research facilities and animal handling areas of D3, abandoned since 1999.

5. Role in the Game
The portable device is the primary reward of the side quest The Last Veterinary Ward, in which Edmund locates and recovers it.
The acoustic deterrent provides a nonlethal method of avoiding encounters. It is particularly useful for players attempting a pacifist campaign. The device integrates with the animals' existing behavioral systems rather than requiring a separate artificial intelligence architecture.
