1. Summary
American operators are the members of the clandestine American special operations unit at Schwarzwald: exactly 93 specialized, predefined individuals who operate only inside the main facility, from D3 downward. See: Factions › American Special Operations Unit.
2. Origin
They enter the base through secret accesses of their own; nobody knows where they are or why they exist, and Hamish and Edmund talk about it during the game. Their precise deployment route remains unknown to the player. See: Factions › American Special Operations Unit.
3. Appearance and Anatomy
Unlike Brazilian soldiers, the operators are not procedurally generated.
They are 93 persistent, predefined individuals, each with a unique identity and personality.
3.1 Equipment
Their equipment includes:
- Fictional, futuristic firearms.
- Integrated grenade launchers.
- Conventional grenades.
- EMP grenades intended to neutralize hostile robotic systems.
- Specialized protective uniforms and armor capable of sustaining substantially more damage than conventional infantry equipment.
They remain mortal despite their superior protection.
3.2 Uniform Number
What a dead operator carries instead of dog tags, and how Edmund reads it: See: Systems › Dead Soldiers Registry.

4.1 Organization and Territory
The unit's organization, its size and its territory are described with the faction. See: Factions › American Special Operations Unit.
4.2 Training
American operators are exceptionally well trained, coordinated, and prepared for the unusual threats within Schwarzwald.
Operators are specifically trained to manage biological, technological, and memetic dangers.
Their dialogue reflects this knowledge.
"You know the drill, gentlemen. Don't look at the walls. Don't read anything. Keep your eyes on the objective. Find the intruder and get out."
4.3 SQUAD Units
SQUAD Units classify American operators as intruders and may attack them, while the older Patrol Robots treat them as authorized personnel. American military dialogue indicates that the operators are aware of this danger and that similar problems have occurred before, which explains their use of EMP grenades against advanced robotic threats. See: Enemies › SQUAD Unit.
5. Detection and Combat
American security systems may detect Edmund through surveillance cameras or other means. From D3 downward, the cameras belong to the American security systems.
A camera can silently stop its normal movement and begin tracking him without activating a conventional alarm.
Hamish may notice the development and warn Edmund that an unknown force is approaching.
Once detected, American operators are mobilized according to their independent Threat Level. Operators appear near the relevant elevator access after being mobilized. See: Systems › Military Threat Levels.
6. Counterplay
Edmund can take their equipment from dead operators, EMP grenades included.
Amanda's False Alarm intervention may cancel alerts affecting the American force, subject to its probabilistic limitations. See: Systems › Amanda's Authority And Trust.
7. Population and Persistence
Killed operators are permanently removed from the available force.
Additional teams may arrive after delays, but the total contingent can never exceed the original 93 individuals.
7.1 Permanent Casualties
Every American operator has a persistent identity and death state.
Once all 93 operators have been eliminated, there are no further American reinforcements available during the game.
This does not imply that the United States has abandoned Schwarzwald. Deploying another suitably equipped and trained force would require substantially more time.
Eliminating all 93 operators triggers the Ninety-Three escalation and its permanent military siege. See: Systems › Military Threat Levels. See: Systems › Persistent Consequences.
