Encrypted Expedition Radios

1. Summary

The siblings and Hamish employ custom encrypted expedition radios, the indispensable communications equipment discreetly prepared by Hamish for the expedition. They are treated within the story as secure against local military interception.

2. Origin

Friedrich explicitly advised traveling with as little conspicuous equipment as possible. The expedition therefore carries only the indispensable communications equipment discreetly prepared by Hamish, an encrypted radio communication system established for the expedition.

3. Nature and Properties

The radios are treated within the story as secure against local military interception. Radio communication does not remove the need for physical stealth or negate the danger of carrying and operating electronics: even apparently ordinary electronic devices can betray a clandestine party under the wrong conditions.

4. History and Custody

Edmund, Lorraine and Hamish carry the radios into the Amazon. Hamish's support station works through the expedition's radio network and his external contacts.

5. Role in the Game

The radios carry the cooperation between the protagonist in the field and his sister and the butler, a pillar of the game. See: Vision › 3. Gameplay Pillars. Edmund contacts Hamish through the encrypted radio system whenever he needs intelligence or advice, as when the D2–D3 elevator turns out to have no power. The butler's progressive exposure changes these communications.
