1. Overview

  • Campaign Setting: Schwarzwald Research Complex, Underground Level D2, Brazil
  • Historical Foundation: American Cold War construction begun in 1948, with machinery and workshops designed by German engineers recruited through Operation Paperclip
  • Campaign Period: 2021
  • Playable Character: Edmund Sinclair von Veylor-Schloss
  • Supporting Characters: Lorraine Sinclair von Veylor-Schloss and Hamish
  • Primary Objective: Find a way to reach Underground Level D3
  • Chapter Conclusion: Edmund successfully descends into D3, initiating Chapter Six — Gates of Hell.

Chapter Five begins immediately after Edmund successfully penetrates the Schwarzwald installation and gains access to the elevator connecting the surface complex, D1, with Underground Level D2.

What D2 contains and the state of its systems are described with the level. See: Places › D2

The player is entering a facility that has been largely abandoned since the catastrophic evacuation of 1999.

The chapter's primary purpose is to introduce the player to the industrial infrastructure of Schwarzwald, expand the historical mystery surrounding the installation, and establish the mechanical challenges involved in reaching its deeper levels.

The player already understands the broader expedition objective: ultimately reaching the region of the complex associated with the Skull Helmet.

However, Edmund does not possess a complete map of the underground installation. He knows that he must descend, but he does not necessarily know where the relevant elevators, technical facilities, documents, or maintenance systems are located.

The chapter therefore emphasizes exploration, observation, investigation, environmental problem-solving, and tactical freedom.

The primary progression objective is simple: gain access to D3. The methods used to accomplish it are deliberately non-linear.

1.1 Underground Military Presence

Encountering Brazilian soldiers inside D2 is rare under ordinary conditions, although not impossible, and becomes more likely as the player's actions raise the installation's Threat Level. Soldiers follow a persistent, dynamic patrol simulation rather than a fixed sequence of scripted encounters, and Brazilian military patrols do not ordinarily penetrate D3 or the deeper levels.

See: Systems › Military Threat Levels

See: Enemies › Brazilian Soldier

1.2 Friedrich's Access Notebook

Edmund carries the handwritten notebook of access codes prepared by his father, Friedrich Sinclair von Veylor-Schloss; at a secured door or elevator, the player searches it through the inventory and enters the appropriate code manually. Why a correct code is not always enough is a rule of the access codes.

See: Artifacts and Technology › Friedrich's Access Notebook

See: Systems › Access Codes And Elevator Passwords

1.3 Lorraine and Hamish

Lorraine continues as the principal tactical companion, whom the player can order to follow, hold, guard an area or return to protect Hamish, and may leave on the surface; failure to save her when soldiers surprise her results in Game Over. Hamish continues as the strategic support coordinator at his portable station, and the interventions he can attempt depend on the contacts Edmund established during Chapter Two.

See: Systems › Companions

See: Systems › Strategic Preparation

1.4 Chapter Design Principles

The following principles govern the implementation of Chapter Five.

Non-Linear Exploration: The player is given clear overarching objectives without being forced through one rigid sequence of intermediate activities.

Depth-Based Progression: a principle of the whole game. See: Vision › 6. Purpose And Design Principles

Consequential Engineering: Technical systems are physical, persistent, and subject to meaningful failure.

Dynamic Military Simulation: Soldier behavior, patrol routes, discoveries, and command responses emerge from the evolving world state rather than fixed chapter triggers.

Strategic Preparation Payoff: Decisions made during Chapter Two affect the options available to Hamish during later exploration.

Tactical Companion Freedom: Lorraine may be positioned and assigned defensive responsibilities according to the player's needs.

Persistent Consequences: Checkpoints permit continued play but do not undo irreversible world changes.

Environmental Storytelling: Historical documents, machinery, artifacts, remains, and recordings progressively establish the history of Schwarzwald without revealing its deepest secrets prematurely.

Optional Exploration with Tangible Rewards: Side quests offer useful equipment, intelligence, navigation information, future access opportunities, or other substantive advantages.

Delayed Narrative Rewards: Information discovered in D2 may become relevant much later, especially the D6 researcher's recorded access code.

2. Opening

The chapter begins as the elevator from D1 arrives at D2.

Edmund steps into an immense subterranean industrial environment, quite different from the surface installations.

The facilities exhibit an older industrial character, reflecting the technological ambitions of the German engineers, recruited after the war, who designed much of its machinery inside its American construction.

Large mechanical assemblies, heavy doors, loading areas, industrial corridors, engineering laboratories, and abandoned workshops suggest that Schwarzwald was built to support projects far beyond conventional military research.

The environment should create an impression of scale, historical secrecy, and technological ambition.

The player receives the principal objective:

Main Quest: Find a Way to Reach D3

No rigid sequence of intermediate objectives is imposed at the beginning. The player may explore accessible areas, investigate equipment, discover documents, and identify potential routes.

Edmund can also return to D1 through the original elevator at any time, unless a specific narrative event temporarily restricts movement.

Chapter boundaries do not constitute permanent barriers between environments.

2.1 D2 Environmental Identity

D2's workshops, archives and remains carry evidence of the installation's German and Nazi history and of the catastrophic evacuation of 1999. These discoveries establish that the catastrophe was real and devastating without yet explaining the precise nature of the Information Hazard.

See: Places › D2

Among these discoveries is a recovered testimony from personnel who escaped the lower levels.

See: In-World Documents

3. Main Quest

…

3.1 The Inoperative Elevator

During the exploration of D2, Edmund eventually discovers the elevator intended to provide access to D3.

He approaches its control panel, expecting to consult Friedrich's notebook and enter the corresponding access code.

However, the panel is completely inactive.

There are no functioning indicators, no illuminated keypad, and no apparent response from the elevator.

Edmund cannot enter a password because the elevator's control system has no power.

Investigation reveals that the problem is not an ordinary mechanical malfunction.

3.1.1 Historical Explanation

Why the deeper elevators have no power while the D1–D2 elevator still works, and the emergency arrangement of the D2–D3 elevator, are explained with the elevator power systems. See: Artifacts and Technology › Elevator Power Arrangements

3.2 Consultation with Hamish

Edmund contacts Hamish using the encrypted radio communication system established for the expedition.

Hamish investigates the problem using the technical information available to him, including previously obtained intelligence and accessible documentation.

An illustrative exchange:

Edmund: "Hamish, I've located the elevator to the third level. Unfortunately, it appears to be completely without power."

Hamish: "I see. Allow me a moment, Master Edmund. I believe there may be an explanation."

Edmund: "Go on."

Hamish: "According to the information available to me, the lower elevator systems were deliberately disconnected during the evacuation. It appears to have been a security precaution."

Edmund: "Then how am I supposed to reach the lower levels?"

Hamish: "There should be an emergency maintenance route, although I would strongly advise against using it unless absolutely necessary. We have no reliable information concerning its present condition."

Edmund: "Is there another possibility?"

Hamish: "Yes. The auxiliary power installation may still contain the equipment required to restore the elevator's emergency supply."

Edmund learns that the restoration procedure is associated with A2, the auxiliary power generation and electrical distribution facility located on the surface.

The player is directed toward investigating that facility, without losing the freedom to search for other routes.

Main Quest Updated: Investigate the Auxiliary Power Facility

3.3 Returning to the Surface — The Truck Discovery

Edmund must return to the surface to investigate A2.

This return is an important opportunity to connect underground exploration with the larger surface world.

As Edmund prepares to travel toward the auxiliary installation, Hamish communicates a useful discovery.

3.3.1 Radio Event — A Possible Means of Transportation

Hamish: "Master Edmund, I believe there is something that may be of assistance to you."

Edmund: "What have you found?"

Hamish: "A truck. It appears to be in serviceable condition, and I believe it could prove rather useful for travelling between the installations."

Edmund: "Where is it?"

Hamish: "I'll mark its location on your map. I would suggest taking a look before setting off."

This event introduces the truck as a practical transportation opportunity rather than an arbitrarily imposed mission objective.

The truck may be located within an accessible logistical or maintenance area on the surface.

Acquiring and using it remains dependent on the player's actions and the situation around the vehicle.

The player is not necessarily required to use the truck. Travelling on foot may remain possible, although slower and potentially more exposed to environmental hazards.

3.3.2 Military Checkpoints

The patrols and security activity on the surface roads are described with the road network. See: Places › Military Road Network

If Edmund established useful contacts within the Brazilian military administration during Chapter Two, Hamish may possess the strategic capability to arrange recognition of the vehicle as part of an authorized equipment transfer.

For example, the vehicle may be administratively identified as carrying technical materials between two installations.

If the operation succeeds, some soldiers may allow it to pass without interference.

If those contacts were not established, the option is unavailable.

The player must then use other methods.

This is an application of the Strategic Preparation System rather than a universal ability belonging to Hamish.

See: Systems › Strategic Preparation

3.4 A2 Auxiliary Power Facility

The A2 installation, its diesel storage and its equipment are described with the facility. See: Places › A2 — Power And Utilities Complex

The player must investigate the installation to understand how the emergency elevator supply can be restored.

Simply discovering the generator is not sufficient.

3.4.1 Engineering Blueprint

Edmund must locate or interpret the appropriate technical blueprint identifying the relationship between the generator, the distribution equipment, and the D2–D3 elevator.

What the diagram shows and where its marked emergency power line leads are described with the facility. See: Places › A2 — Power And Utilities Complex

The challenge requires understanding the diagram and determining how to restore the emergency circuit.

3.5 The Mechanical Security Interlock

The interlock that protects the emergency electrical connection is described with the device. See: Artifacts and Technology › A2 Emergency Generator And Interlock

A warning is displayed before the player begins the interaction. See: In-World Documents › Emergency Power Interlock Warning

3.5.1 Gameplay Rules

Once Edmund initiates the authorization procedure, the mechanism begins a thirty-second countdown.

The player may attempt the mechanical combination no more than three times.

A visible mechanical timer displays the remaining time.

The correct combination must be established through investigation, technical evidence, or appropriate notes.

The puzzle should not rely on arbitrary guessing.

3.5.2 Successful Authorization

How the interlock releases is described with the device. See: Artifacts and Technology › A2 Emergency Generator And Interlock

The player can proceed with the necessary electrical reconnection and generator restoration activities.

3.5.3 Failed Authorization

If the player enters three incorrect combinations, or the timer expires, the assembly activates its internal destruction mechanism. See: Artifacts and Technology › A2 Emergency Generator And Interlock

The D2–D3 elevator is permanently disabled for the remainder of that campaign.

The player cannot undo the failure by loading an ordinary checkpoint.

The surrounding world state records the destruction as a permanent event.

The campaign does not end, however.

A separate emergency maintenance route remains available.

3.6 Restoring the Diesel Generator

Once the player has correctly authorized the electrical reconnection, the auxiliary power system can be prepared for operation. A2's fuel reserves are described with the facility. See: Places › A2 — Power And Utilities Complex

Edmund must locate the appropriate industrial fuel supply connection, connect the designated hose or fuel line to the generator's fuel system, and activate the required equipment.

The player then starts the diesel generator.

The machinery comes to life, and the restored emergency electrical circuit begins supplying the D2–D3 elevator.

The generator's fuel capacity and automated operation are described with the device. See: Artifacts and Technology › A2 Emergency Generator And Interlock

The restoration procedure is performed once, unless external interference subsequently interrupts generator operation.

The restoration does not activate the principal nuclear electrical distribution system.

Consequently, the D2–D3 elevator may become operational while D3 itself remains completely dark.

This distinction is essential to the transition into Chapter Six.

3.7 Generator Interference

Once restored, the running generator can be noticed by Brazilian surface patrols that pass near A2, which may report it or shut it down, so that Edmund must restore operation again; a third shutdown leads command to establish a permanent security presence around the facility. Discovery is never automatic, and the generator may also remain operational for the entire game without attracting military attention.

See: Systems › Military Threat Levels

3.8 Hamish's Strategic Intervention

If Edmund cultivated the relevant military contacts during Chapter Two, Hamish may arrange for the generator's operation to be recognized as authorized maintenance, so that soldiers who encounter it leave it running; the intervention is not guaranteed, and without those contacts Hamish cannot offer it.

See: Systems › Strategic Preparation

Illustrative dialogue:

Edmund: "Hamish, the soldiers have shut down the generator again."

Hamish: "How troublesome. There may be a way to prevent further interference."

Edmund: "What do you propose?"

Hamish: "If our contacts are still in a position to help us, I may be able to arrange for the equipment to be listed as undergoing authorized maintenance."

Edmund: "And the soldiers?"

Hamish: "With the appropriate instructions, they should have little reason to interfere."

3.9 Alternative Route — Elevator Maintenance Access

An emergency maintenance access route also leads from D2 to D3; why it exists and why the interlock does not affect it are described with the level. See: Places › D2

3.9.1 Discovering the Route

The player may discover the route through exploration, engineering documentation, environmental clues, or recovered maintenance records.

The route is not necessarily marked on the primary objective interface from the beginning.

Its existence may become more apparent after Hamish discusses the disabled elevator.

3.9.2 Environmental Design

The route's dangers and the traversal it offers are described with the level. See: Places › D2

4. Side Quests

…

4.1 The Forgotten Archives

  • Category: Optional Investigation
  • Primary Location: D2 Technical Archives
  • Primary Rewards: Historical intelligence, partial maps, access information

4.1.1 Premise

During exploration, Edmund discovers references to an abandoned industrial records department. The department and its documentation are described with the level. See: Places › D2

Its principal archive is secured.

To access the records, the player must identify the appropriate entrance, interpret available clues, and obtain or determine the relevant authorization code.

Friedrich's notebook may provide useful information.

4.1.2 Discoveries

What the archive holds is described with the level. See: Places › D2

4.1.3 Gameplay Benefits

Successful investigation rewards the player with:

  1. Partial technical maps revealing sections of D2 and previously unknown maintenance passages.
  2. Access-related notes that may assist with later secured doors.
  3. Historical documents expanding the player's understanding of Schwarzwald.

This side quest rewards curiosity and investigation with practical navigation advantages.

It is not required for chapter completion.

4.2 The Quartermaster's Cache

  • Category: Optional Exploration and Equipment Recovery
  • Primary Location: D2 Military Logistics and Storage Sector
  • Primary Rewards: Weapons, ammunition, batteries, survival supplies

4.2.1 Premise

Edmund discovers evidence of an old equipment storage facility that remained sealed after the evacuation. Its blocked entrance is described with the level. See: Places › D2

The player must investigate the surrounding logistical infrastructure and discover a viable access method.

Alternative maintenance passages and historical technical information may assist the search.

4.2.2 Discoveries

The cache's contents and their condition are described with the level. See: Places › D2

Possible rewards include:

  • Firearms and ammunition.
  • Weapons that can be assigned to Lorraine or Hamish.
  • Batteries for portable lighting equipment.
  • Protective equipment.
  • Additional survival supplies.
  • Useful maintenance tools.

4.2.3 Gameplay Benefits

This mission provides an opportunity to improve the expedition's operational readiness before entering D3.

In particular, the recovered supplies may become highly valuable once Edmund begins exploring the completely dark lower environment.

The quest also reinforces the player's responsibility for equipping companions.

Lorraine is an extensively trained combatant, capable of operating with the same general military competence as Edmund.

Hamish begins his expedition without a firearm, but may be equipped by the player if suitable weapons are obtained.

Both remain vulnerable to surprise, capture, or overwhelming military forces.

The side quest is optional and must not be the exclusive means of obtaining equipment essential to mandatory progression.

4.3 The Silent Frequency

  • Category: Optional Historical Investigation
  • Primary Location: D2 Communications and Recording Department
  • Primary Rewards: Evacuation intelligence, maintenance-route information, future D6 access code

4.3.1 Premise

Edmund finds an abandoned communications room containing records from the final days of Schwarzwald's operation.

The player must investigate the equipment and recover accessible transmissions.

What the preserved recordings contain is described with the recordings. See: In-World Documents › The Evacuation Recordings

4.3.2 The Evacuation Recordings

The player recovers the distress messages of the evacuation; their content and purpose are described with the recordings. See: In-World Documents › The Evacuation Recordings

4.3.3 The D6 Researcher's Recording

The player also recovers the message of a researcher trapped in a secured room in D6, who gives the room and its access code. See: In-World Documents › The D6 Researcher's Recording

4.3.4 Narrative Function

At this point in the campaign, Edmund does not yet understand what the Information Hazard truly is.

The researcher mentions protective precautions and abnormal behavior, but the recording does not provide a complete explanation.

The testimony instead raises unsettling questions.

Why were people threatening to burn him alive?

Why did they express such intense hatred toward someone who believed he had done nothing to them?

What happened to the people outside?

Did the researcher survive?

These questions remain unresolved during Chapter Five.

4.3.5 Delayed Payoff in D6

The player retains the researcher's room identification and access code through the recovered records.

Many hours later, during exploration of D6, Edmund may locate the corresponding secured room.

The room is optional. Its contents and the researcher's fate are still open. See: Canon › Open Questions

This delayed objective connects two widely separated parts of Schwarzwald and rewards players who investigate historical evidence.

4.3.6 Additional Gameplay Benefits

Beyond the D6 room code, the recovered communications may reveal information about maintenance infrastructure and the emergency passage connecting D2 with D3.

This information can help the player locate the alternative route if the main elevator is unavailable.

However, the passage must remain discoverable through other means, since the side quest is optional.

The Silent Frequency is designed to reward exploration both immediately and much later in the campaign.

5. Key Narrative Sequences

…

6. World-State Changes

…

6.1 Permanent Consequence of the Interlock

If the mechanical interlock is successfully restored, Edmund can use the ordinary elevator for future journeys.

If the interlock is destroyed, the elevator remains inoperative for the rest of the campaign.

The player must use the maintenance route whenever travelling between D2 and D3, unless a separate route is established later through legitimate gameplay developments.

Restoring the main nuclear power system in a subsequent chapter does not repair the physically destroyed interlock.

This permanent consequence is recorded by the Persistent World State system.

The player may also voluntarily choose the maintenance route without attempting the mechanical combination.

Both routes are legitimate ways to complete the chapter.

6.2 Persistent World State

Chapter Five reinforces the rule on irreversible consequences, with examples such as a destroyed interlock, an eliminated soldier or a reinforced A2. Once the campaign advances to Chapter Six, returning to D2 does not restart Chapter Five, and the player may freely revisit earlier installations according to the actual state of the world.

See: Systems › Persistent Consequences

7. Chapter Ending

The chapter concludes when Edmund successfully reaches Underground Level D3.

Two principal routes are established.

7.1 Route A — Restored Elevator

Edmund successfully unlocks the mechanical security interlock, restores the emergency electrical connection, and activates the diesel generator.

The D2–D3 elevator becomes operational.

He returns to D2 and approaches the previously inactive control panel.

This time, the panel responds.

Edmund consults Friedrich's notebook, identifies the appropriate password, and enters it.

The elevator opens.

He boards and begins descending toward D3.

The successful restoration permits convenient future travel between these levels, provided the generator remains operational.

7.2 Route B — Emergency Maintenance Passage

Edmund locates the alternative maintenance access.

This route may be chosen voluntarily or become necessary after the destruction of the elevator's mechanical interlock.

He traverses the hazardous service infrastructure connecting the levels.

The passage offers a slower, more dangerous descent and may remain the player's only means of travelling between D2 and D3 throughout the campaign.

7.3 Shared Narrative Outcome

Regardless of the route, Edmund reaches D3.

The circumstances of his arrival may differ according to the route chosen, his companion arrangements, and the persistent state of the world.

The major canonical event remains the same:

Edmund has descended into the next major region of Schwarzwald.

At the end of the chapter, an event still to be defined lets a Brazilian soldier see Edmund in D2, or believe he does, and run after him. The soldier comes to suspect that someone has entered D3. Military command questions him about what he actually observed and orders him to return to D1, because Brazilian soldiers are prohibited from entering D3.

Chapter Five ends.

7.4 Transition to Chapter Six — Gates of Hell

D3 is fundamentally different from D2.

The principal electrical supply serving the lower levels remains unavailable.

The environment is in darkness. Edmund's light source there is described with the flashlight. See: Artifacts and Technology › Flashlight

Whereas D1 and D2 contain no monster encounters, D3 introduces the first creatures of the campaign.

However, the appearance of monsters is not immediate.

The opening portion of Chapter Six must establish an extended horror atmosphere through darkness, environmental clues, sound, uncertainty, and growing apprehension.

The player should gradually recognize that the dangers of D3 are profoundly different from the military threats encountered near the surface.

Restoring the principal nuclear power and electrical distribution infrastructure will become an important objective of the subsequent underground progression.

Reactivation of that infrastructure may permit other lower-level elevators to function.

It will not automatically repair the D2–D3 emergency interlock if the player previously destroyed it.

The first monster encounter and the detailed events of D3 belong to Chapter Six and are not defined in this document.

Chapter Five — Mystery Base concludes with Edmund reaching D3, having discovered the industrial foundations and historical remnants of Schwarzwald while remaining largely unaware of the true nature of the catastrophe awaiting him below.

Next Chapter: Chapter Six — Gates of Hell.

8. Open Questions

This document defines the principal narrative structure, progression requirements, gameplay systems, and three representative optional side quests for Chapter Five.

What the chapter leaves out and the details that remain open are listed in Canon. See: Canon › Open Questions
