1. Summary
The portal-research document Edmund brings from D6 to the scientist of The Last Shift, whose last page concludes that the portals move within the space-time continuum and offer no passage beyond physical existence.
2. Text
Concluding Assessment — Portal Transit Research
Our studies indicate a substantial probability that the portal mechanism can function as intended. Available evidence suggests a relationship to the geometry of space-time, and we cannot exclude the possibility that comparable systems were used by ancient civilizations across the galaxy. However, the mechanism must not be mistaken for a supernatural process. Our present models describe transit between locations or states within the space-time continuum. They provide no basis for concluding that the system permits passage beyond the fundamental structure of physical existence.
3. Context
The source gives this passage as suggested text for the document's concluding passage.
The conclusion explains that the portals appear to be a functional, extraordinary technology, perhaps used by ancient civilizations to traverse distant regions of space. But the available evidence describes movement within the space-time continuum, not a supernatural means of escaping reality.
The document does not prove that the scientist's wider metaphysical interpretation was false. It reveals that the machine on which he placed his hopes could not be justified as the escape he sought.
Partial reverse engineering of the spacecraft contributed to the development of D6's experimental portal system.

4. Gameplay
The document is part of the body of portal-research documents stored on D6. After reaching D6, Edmund may retrieve them and return to the scientist on D4.
When Edmund hands over the documents, the scientist reads urgently, then drops the document. It lies open at the last page he was studying.
Completing the quest requires Edmund to read the document that the scientist dropped.
