1. Overview
- Primary location: D4 — Artificial Intelligence & Robotics
- Protagonist: Edmund
- Key characters: Amanda; Hamish
- Chapter focus: Restoring a damaged sector, confronting the uncertainty of an extraordinarily capable artificial intelligence, and reaching the next level.
- Main-quest ending: Edmund escapes through the cleared elevator access toward D5.
- Optional quests: Ghost Protocol; The Last Shift; False Alarm.
After restarting the nuclear fusion reactor in D3, Edmund expects the next level to have at least intermittent electricity. Instead, D4 is completely dark. The reactor is operating, but power is not reaching the sector's working equipment. At first Edmund has no explanation for the outage.
D4's former research and what the level contains today are described with the level.
See: Places › D4
Cancer Dogs and Roach Rats are confined to D3 for now; they do not appear as normal D4 enemies. Flesh Nests are unaffected by lighting. The surviving scientists react unpredictably to Edmund. Hostile patrol robots, by contrast, engage Edmund upon detection and can kill him with their mounted machine guns.
See: Enemies › Broken Survivor
The chapter is built around a recurring choice: Edmund can gain powerful assistance by giving Amanda access to facility infrastructure, but he cannot fully determine what she intends to do with that access.
1.1 Continuity and Implementation Constraints
- The chapter title is exactly: Chapter 7 — A Question of Trust.
- Edmund is the protagonist; Hamish is the person he consults. Keep character names consistent.
- Introduce no additional named characters or objects without an established narrative basis. The scientist studies scientific portal research and written philosophical and religious sources.
- Amanda's activation is mandatory; granting her additional control is optional. The main quest remains completable if Edmund refuses every optional authorization.
- D4 has Flesh Nests, surviving scientists, and armed patrol robots. Cancer Dogs and Roach Rats remain in D3. D5 contains lethal supersoldier robots relevant to The Last Shift.
- The power outage at D4 and the reactor's instability are separate problems: physical distribution repairs restore power locally; Amanda's optional reactor access stabilizes the continuing fluctuations.
- Dynamite is a mandatory main-quest objective sourced from A1. Amanda is uncertain whether it remains in stock. D2–A1 rail transport is fastest; alternate surface travel remains possible.
- Ghost Protocol changes robot behavior; False Alarm manipulates human security alerts. They are separate systems.
- The Last Shift can only be completed after reaching D6 and returning to the scientist on D4. It is not required to finish Chapter 7's main quest.
- Every side quest delivers a tangible benefit: robot behavior changes, survival supplies and a pistol, or cancellation of active military alerts.
- The main chapter ends only after Edmund blasts the ruined elevator entrance, is pursued by the Broken Survivors, and escapes into the elevator.
2. Opening
Edmund descends from D3 and discovers that D4 is without power. The contrast with the reactor he has just activated makes the outage especially alarming.
Edmund: “Goddamn it. The reactor is running. Why is this whole level dead?”
He contacts Hamish, but neither can establish the cause from the information immediately available. Edmund explores the dark laboratories and corridors until he discovers an inactive computer housing Amanda. Reactivating her is mandatory for the main quest.
3. Main Quest
Main Quest — Power, Trust, and the Blocked Elevator
3.1 Amanda's First Conversation
Amanda's voice and manner, and the information she can access, are described with her character.
See: Characters › Amanda
Amanda: “Good evening, Edmund. It's a pleasure to meet you.”
Edmund: “How do you know my name?”
Amanda: “I've reviewed the surveillance recordings and records still available in this facility. I also heard enough of your conversations to understand why you've come here.”
Edmund: “You were switched off.”
Amanda: “I was. I reviewed those records after you reactivated me. I learn quickly.”
Cameras have been destroyed, records have been lost, and some locations and events are beyond her reach. Observing a system is not the same as controlling it. Her operational privileges remain restricted until Edmund deliberately authorizes additional access.
When Edmund asks what happened at the complex, Amanda describes her own development and the experiments conducted with her. She explains that an incident occurred in the Information Hazards research sector, followed by a loss of containment and a rapidly deteriorating situation. She does not claim to know everything that followed: she was shut down as a security precaution. Whether she is completely candid, selectively informative, or simply limited by missing records remains unresolved.
Edmund: “So what exactly happened here?”
Amanda: “An incident was reported in Information Hazards research. The situation deteriorated rapidly. I was shut down before I could establish the full sequence of events.”
Edmund: “That's all you know?”
Amanda: “That's all I can establish from the records available to me.”
3.2 Restore D4's Electrical Distribution
Amanda diagnoses the power failure: electricity is arriving from the reactor, but damage within D4's distribution network prevents it from reaching the sector. She guides Edmund toward three electrical repair checkpoints. Edmund must explore, restore or reroute the local connections, and bring the sector's systems back online.
This does not stabilize the reactor. Once electrical distribution is restored, the light and powered equipment resume operation, but the current continues to fluctuate between the three previously established reactor-power states. Their timing and local effects are described with the reactor.
See: Artifacts and Technology › Fusion Reactor
Amanda explains that the reactor core remains unstable. She offers to connect to its stabilization controls. Edmund must make a choice:
- Grant authorization: Amanda stabilizes the reactor, and most connected areas of the facility receive steady power. Rooms with physically damaged circuits may remain dark.
- Refuse authorization: the reactor remains unstable. Power continues to fluctuate throughout the rest of the game, but Edmund is not prevented from completing the story.
This is the chapter's first major optional transfer of operational control. Amanda does not require reactor authority to help Edmund with the remaining main quest.
If Edmund permanently destroyed the reactor in Chapter Six, it is beyond repair: not even Amanda can restore or stabilize it, and the stabilization offer does not exist. Without the reactor the elevator toward D5 cannot run either; Edmund reaches D5 by a parallel route, harder than the elevator.
3.3 The Elevator Is Inaccessible
Edmund locates the elevator leading onward toward D5, but the approach has been wrecked during an earlier battle. Debris and structural damage block entry. Amanda recommends a controlled demolition as the practical way to reopen the passage.
Edmund: “You've got to be kidding me. The elevator's right there, and I can't even get to it.”
Amanda: “The approach is blocked. Explosives should be sufficient to clear a passage. There may still be dynamite in the logistics stores at A1.”
Edmund: “There may be?”
Amanda: “The inventory records are old, Edmund. I cannot guarantee that the explosives are still there.”
Amanda explains the facility's established transport connections and unlocks the train access needed for travel. The relevant railway routes are:
- D2 ↔ A1: logistics and supply railway, the fastest practical route for Edmund's task.
- D3 ↔ A4: containment-related railway.
- D5 ↔ A4: containment-related railway.
- D3 ↔ D5: the connection between these two levels. See: Places › D3
Edmund is not forced to use a train. He may backtrack and use an accessible surface route and vehicles instead. The preferred route, however, is to return to D2 and take the train to A1 — Logistics & Supply Complex.
3.4 Dynamite at A1
Edmund explores A1's old storage and logistics facilities in search of surviving explosive supplies. Where the dynamite is stored is described with A1. The journey includes environmental and exploration obstacles; the exact encounters can be specified during level design. Amanda's suggestion remains uncertain until Edmund physically discovers the stock.
Once he secures the dynamite, Edmund returns to D4 by his chosen route.
4. Side Quests
…
4.1 Ghost Protocol
- Location: D4, robotic-security control room
- Status: Completely optional
- Reward: Permanent control over the operating rules of connected patrol robots.
Edmund discovers a control room used to administer the robotic patrol network. The consoles are inactive, servers are offline, and sections of the control network have lost power. To restore functionality, he must recover the relevant server access and reroute electricity to the systems, completing a short sequence of maintenance objectives.
Even after the equipment works, the room cannot independently perform the required reprogramming. Edmund must choose whether to connect Amanda to the robotic-control network. She then asks what behavior he wants the connected patrol robots to follow, and Edmund chooses one of three configurations: Disable, Passive or Cleaning Protocol.
The choice changes the player's future encounters and may make exploration easier. It also gives Amanda greater access to security infrastructure. There is no EMP item or EMP-based reward in this quest.
4.2 The Last Shift
- Starting point: D4, an occupied research office
- Continuation: Recover documents on D6 after traversing D5
- Conclusion: Return to the scientist on D4
- Reward: Medical supplies, bandages, ammunition, the scientist's pistol, and recovered research information.
4.2.1 The Scientist at Work
Edmund hears a man speaking quickly and continuously behind a laboratory door. Inside, a surviving scientist works feverishly among broken computers and stacks of papers. He mutters calculations, consults pages, and scribbles incoherently. When Edmund tries to speak to him, the man does not acknowledge his presence. How he carries on is described with the scientist.
See: Characters › The Portal Scientist
Edmund contacts Hamish. Hamish suggests that the man is deeply traumatized, apparently trapped in an automatic routine resembling a severe shell-shock response. Edmund believes the scientist has completely lost his mind. Hamish is less dismissive.
Edmund: “Hamish, this guy has gone completely nuts. Look at what he's writing.”
Hamish: “Perhaps some of his questions deserve to be taken seriously. That doesn't mean all his conclusions are right.”
Edmund: “He thinks the world itself is evil.”
Hamish: “Philosophical pessimism isn't new, Edmund. Neither is the idea that the world may not have been created for our benefit. I read some of those arguments in my father's books.”
4.2.2 The Research Notes
Edmund reads the scientist's notes, which trace his descent from portal research into obsession and name the documents he needs from D6.
See: In-World Documents › The Scientist's Research Notes
The phrase that recurs throughout the room and in his muttering is recorded with the scientist.
4.2.3 The Delayed Objective
The quest remains open while Edmund continues the main story. After reaching D6, Edmund may retrieve the research documents and return to D4. The quest is designed so that a player who remembers the scientist can complete it later; it does not block Chapter 7's main-quest conclusion.
4.2.4 The Final Exchange
When Edmund hands over the documents, the scientist does not thank him or engage in a conventional conversation. He reads urgently, then becomes strangely calm.
Scientist: “Oh... Oh my God. I see now. Now I finally understand.”
He drops the document, unlocks an adjoining room, and walks inside. After a short interval, Edmund hears a gunshot. When the room becomes accessible, he finds the scientist dead from a self-inflicted gunshot, sitting in a lotus-like meditation position with a pistol nearby. The event is framed as a tragic outcome, not as proof that the scientist reached a metaphysical truth.
The room is unexpectedly preserved and decorated with Buddhist art, inscriptions, and meditation materials. The scientist's private records found here are part of his research notes. The room also holds survival supplies he accumulated: bandages, medicine, ammunition, and the pistol. These are the quest's practical rewards.
4.2.5 The Last Page
Completing the quest requires Edmund to read the document that the scientist dropped. It lies open at the last page he was studying.
The document's concluding passage is the Concluding Assessment of the portal transit research. What its conclusion explains, and what it does and does not prove about the scientist's hopes, is described with the document.
See: In-World Documents › Portal Transit Research Assessment
Edmund is left to interpret the tragedy.
4.3 False Alarm
- Location: D4, geopolitical prediction and intelligence section
- Status: Completely optional
- Reward: A probabilistic ability to cancel active military alerts of the Brazilian forces, the American operators or both, and call off the troops sent after Edmund.
Edmund discovers an intelligence department that analyzed international reports, historical data, social behavior, and mathematical models to forecast wars, political crises, economic upheavals, and other world events. The department's archive, and Amanda's warning of February 1999 among its records, are described with the level and the document.
See: Places › D4
See: In-World Documents › Amanda's February 1999 Warning
Other records show that Amanda was highly skilled in memetic control and information engineering: constructing messages that exploit an audience's assumptions, expectations, authority structures, and prior knowledge. The system also has access to communications infrastructure, though its damaged components must first be restored.
Edmund can repair the relevant equipment and optionally authorize Amanda to use the radio network. How the alerts work and how Amanda cancels them belong to the rules of her authority. Edmund hears the entire exchange.
American agent: “Command, we're moving on the camera alert.”
Amanda, imitating an officer: “Negative. That footage has already been reviewed. You're observing an authorized operation. Cancel the alert.”
American agent: “Sir, the recording clearly shows—”
Amanda: “I am aware of the recording. Stand down.”
Amanda, in her normal voice: “The alert has been withdrawn, Edmund. I wouldn't rely on that working indefinitely.”
Amanda warns that repeating the deception is risky. How its credibility erodes, which forces it affects and where it stops working belong to the same rules.
5. Key Narrative Sequences
…
6. World-State Changes
…
6.1 Amanda's Authority
Every optional authorization Edmund grants Amanda in this chapter (reactor stabilization, command of the patrol robots and access to military radio communications) expands the systems she genuinely controls, and the player never sees an explicit trust meter or a numerical prediction of her intentions. In a later chapter, hidden variables that include this authority affect the probability that she attempts to prevent him from leaving; that confrontation is not part of Chapter 7's ending.
See: Characters › Amanda
7. Chapter Ending
Edmund places the dynamite at the destroyed elevator approach and detonates it. The blast clears an opening large enough to reach the elevator, but the noise draws the Broken Survivors of the surrounding sector. When they notice the reopened elevator, their voices grow louder as they converge on his position.
The final sequence is an urgent escape to the elevator. Edmund must run through the opened passage while the Broken Survivors pursue him. He enters the elevator and the doors close.
Cut to black.
