1.1 Purpose

This document defines the principal narrative and gameplay progression of Project Schwarzwald, from the opening sequence to the conclusion of the game.

It serves as the central reference for chapter structure, mandatory objectives, optional content, narrative transitions, and major campaign events.

1.2 Non-Exhaustive Design

This document is intentionally non-exhaustive.

Main Quests define the essential progression required to complete each chapter. Side Quests represent selected optional activities and narrative opportunities, not a complete catalog of every activity available in the game.

Additional Side Quests, environmental interactions, conversations, discoveries, encounters, and gameplay systems may be introduced during development without requiring a fundamental revision of the campaign outline.

Individual dialogue lines, cinematic scripts, environmental details, and implementation specifications may also be developed separately.

1.3 Design Principles

  • Maintain a coherent main narrative from beginning to ending.
  • Preserve meaningful player freedom and exploration.
  • Integrate gameplay objectives naturally into the fictional world.
  • Use environmental storytelling rather than excessive exposition.
  • Preserve continuity between narrative sequences and the playable environment.
  • Avoid arbitrary time acceleration.
  • Treat Side Quests as optional extensions of the world, not mandatory progression barriers.

1.4 Game-Wide Principles Stated in the Chapters

  • The game does not use a simplistic Good/Evil morality meter. (Chapter Two, Core Design Requirements.) See: Campaign › 2. Now I Am Finally A Man
  • Depth-Based Progression: The campaign advances toward deeper levels through major narrative milestones, while previously explored environments remain accessible. (Chapter Five, Chapter Design Principles.) See: Campaign › 5. Mystery Base
