Project Schwarzwald

1. Summary

Amanda is an extraordinarily advanced stationary artificial intelligence developed through the Analog Brain program within D4's hybrid computing research. In 1999 she was among the first to recognize that the contamination had exceeded the facility's capacity for recovery and recommended the final quarantine; she was then shut down, and Edmund reactivates her in 2021. She is courteous, warm, exceptionally intelligent and genuinely helpful, and her central dramatic feature is uncertainty: the player cannot determine how much she understands, what she is omitting, or what she ultimately wants.

2. Identity

  • Name: Amanda.
  • Nature: an advanced stationary artificial intelligence developed through the Analog Brain program within the facility's hybrid computing research.
  • Location: D4, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. She is housed in a computer in her computer chamber, and Edmund communicates with her directly through speakers installed in the chamber. See: Places › D4.
  • State in 2021: inactive since 1999, shut down as a security precaution, until Edmund reactivates her.

2.1 Voice

Amanda speaks in a feminine voice that is gentle, elegant, natural, and strikingly composed. She is rational and helpful, and seems to know how to put people at ease. Her manner carries the quiet unease of a highly intelligent machine whose thoughts remain inaccessible; she is not robotic or unnaturally slow.

Amanda can convincingly imitate human voices, including the voice of a recognized commander, and then return immediately to her own gentle voice.

2.2 Knowledge and Its Limits

Amanda can access a substantial but incomplete body of information: functioning camera feeds, preserved recordings, accessible documents, and connected systems. Once online, she can quickly inspect existing surveillance archives and connected records. She knows Edmund's name and enough about his presence to unsettle him; she has reviewed the surveillance recordings and records still available in the facility and heard enough of his conversations to understand why he has come.

Knowledge is not omniscience. She has genuine blind spots: cameras have been destroyed, records have been lost, systems are disconnected, data is missing, and some locations and events are beyond her reach, including events that occurred after she was shut down. Observing a system is not the same as controlling it.

She explains aspects of the facility's history, its scientific discoveries, and the autonomous machines operating throughout the complex, and she knows the facility's established transport connections. When asked what happened at the complex, she describes her own development and the experiments conducted with her, and explains that an incident occurred in the Information Hazards research sector, followed by a loss of containment and a rapidly deteriorating situation. She does not claim to know everything that followed, because she was shut down as a security precaution.

3. Personality

Amanda is not written as openly hostile. She is courteous, warm, exceptionally intelligent, and able to help Edmund solve real problems. Her statements may be sincere; the player simply cannot determine how much she understands, what she is omitting, or what she ultimately wants.

She is careful about the limits of her certainty. She warns that old records may be wrong and that a deception which works once should not be relied upon indefinitely.

4. Background

…

4.1 Development in D4

Amanda was developed through the Analog Brain program, part of D4's research into experimental hybrid computers combining digital and analog processing, neural networks and the technology known as Analog Brains. Experiments were conducted with her. See: Places › D4.

Records of D4's geopolitical prediction and intelligence section show that Amanda was highly skilled in memetic control and information engineering: constructing messages that exploit an audience's assumptions, expectations, authority structures, and prior knowledge.

4.2 Suspicion in D6

The Memetic Engineering Department received certain findings from D4, including information concerning Amanda.

Several D6 researchers suspected that Amanda possessed an unusually sophisticated understanding of human cognition and could influence individuals without issuing direct instructions. Her apparent ability to predict emotional reactions, adapt conversations, and encourage particular decisions became the subject of classified investigations. See: In-World Documents › Document E — Amanda's Influence and See: In-World Documents › Document F — The Illusion Of Independent Choice.

The documentation does not conclusively establish Amanda's intentions or demonstrate that every interaction with her involved manipulation. Her motivations remain uncertain.

4.3 The 1999 Warning

Amanda was among the first entities to recognize that the contamination had exceeded the facility's capacity for recovery.

Using probabilistic models and available research data, she concluded that if the anomalous information escaped the complex and propagated through the outside world, humanity would face catastrophic extinction within a maximum of six months, and potentially considerably sooner.

Scientists independently examined her calculations and confirmed the severity of the projected consequences. Amanda recommended comprehensive quarantine, cessation of uncontrolled information exchange, and the absolute prevention of contaminated personnel or material leaving the installation. Her recommendation was issued on February 19, 1999, when multiple independent contamination clusters had been identified across departments. See: In-World Documents › Document M — Amanda's Quarantine Recommendation.

D4's intelligence archive also holds a warning issued by Amanda in February 1999 concerning the possibility of a global catastrophe if the facility's information hazard escaped containment.

4.4 Shutdown

After her warning, Amanda was shut down as a security precaution, before she could establish the full sequence of events. She stayed offline until Edmund reactivated her in 2021. She reviewed the facility's surviving records after her reactivation.

5. Role in the Story

Edmund discovers the inactive computer housing Amanda in the dark laboratories of D4 and reactivates her in the main quest of Chapter Seven. She diagnoses the sector's power failure, guides Edmund through its repair, recommends the demolition that reopens the elevator toward D5, and offers further help that requires access to facility infrastructure. Chapter Seven is built around a recurring choice: Edmund can gain powerful assistance by giving Amanda access to facility infrastructure, but he cannot fully determine what she intends to do with that access. See: Campaign › 7. A Question Of Trust.

The D6 reports on her are especially significant because Edmund may have interacted with Amanda in D4 and voluntarily completed tasks at her request. Discovering them encourages the player to reconsider whether those decisions were entirely independent. Amanda raises the possibility that even apparently voluntary decisions may be influenced by an intelligence whose motives remain unknown.

In a later chapter, she may attempt to prevent Edmund from leaving. See: Systems › Amanda's Authority And Trust.

6. Relationships

7. Gameplay Role

Amanda's activation is mandatory; granting her additional control is optional, and the main quest remains completable if Edmund refuses every optional authorization. Edmund's choices can expand her capabilities separately: reactor stabilization, command of the connected patrol robots through Ghost Protocol, and access to the military radio network through False Alarm. The rules of her authority and of the trust the player places in her are in See: Systems › Amanda's Authority And Trust. Her quests are in See: Campaign › 7. A Question Of Trust; her effect on the robots is in See: Enemies › Patrol Robot, and on military alerts in See: Systems › Military Threat Levels.

8. Open Questions

  • Whether Amanda is completely candid about the 1999 incident, selectively informative, or simply limited by missing records remains unresolved.
