1. Summary

Friedrich's access notebook is a handwritten notebook prepared by Friedrich Sinclair von Veylor-Schloss and carried by Edmund. It holds passwords, access codes, technical references, personal annotations and recollected access information for the Schwarzwald installation, reconstructed largely from memory.

2. Origin

Friedrich reconstructed much of the notebook's information from memory after leaving the installation.

3. Nature and Properties

The notebook contains access codes, passwords, technical references, personal annotations and recollected access information concerning the Schwarzwald installation.

3.1 Reliability

Because Schwarzwald was evacuated and largely abandoned in 1999, and many systems were left untouched, most of the passwords are likely to remain valid. However, Friedrich warned that one or two recollections may be missing or mistaken, that he could have remembered one or two incorrectly, and that some access codes might conceivably have changed.

3.2 Codes and Power

Every elevator requires a password for authorized access. How a code differs from the power of the controls, and what a correct code can and cannot do, are rules of the access codes. See: Systems › Access Codes And Elevator Passwords

See: Artifacts and Technology › Elevator Power Arrangements

4. History and Custody

The notebook was left by Friedrich, and Edmund carries it on the expedition into Schwarzwald.

5. Role in the Game

The notebook lives in Edmund's inventory and is consulted manually. When approaching a secured door or elevator, the player must identify the relevant installation, search the notebook, interpret the available notes, and enter the appropriate code manually. How the notebook's entries are matched to a door, and how reliable its codes remain throughout the campaign, are rules of the access codes. See: Systems › Access Codes And Elevator Passwords

5.1 Chapter Four

Edmund knows from Friedrich's instructions that the mission requires reaching increasingly deep underground levels, but he has no complete operational walkthrough. At the end of Chapter Four he identifies the D1–D2 elevator's access information in the notebook, enters the combination and descends to D2.

5.2 Chapter Five

At the D2–D3 elevator, Edmund expects to consult the notebook, but the panel has no power. After its emergency supply is restored, he consults the notebook again, identifies the appropriate password and descends. The notebook may also help with the secured archive of the Forgotten Archives side quest.
