1. Summary
Every elevator requires a password for authorized access. When approaching a secured door or elevator, the player must identify the relevant installation, search Friedrich's handwritten notebook, interpret the available notes, and enter the appropriate code manually. The notebook itself is described in Artifacts and Technology. See: Artifacts and Technology › Friedrich's Access Notebook

2.1 Consulting the Notebook
The notebook lives in the player's inventory and is consulted manually. It is accessible through Edmund's inventory.
Players should identify a door or elevator and interpret which handwritten entry corresponds to it; the UI should not automatically enter the correct combination. The notebook does not automatically select the correct entry.
2.2 Validity of the Codes
Most passwords are expected to remain valid because the installation was evacuated and many systems were left untouched. Friedrich warns that one or two recollections may be missing or mistaken, and some access codes might conceivably have changed.
Most recorded codes work, but exceptional cases may require additional investigation.
The notebook remains useful throughout the campaign, including later underground levels.
2.3 Code Versus Power
The access code for a door or elevator is distinct from the physical availability of its control system.
A correct password cannot operate an elevator whose electrical and mechanical controls are disabled.
This distinction becomes central to Chapter Five, where the D2–D3 elevator has no power. See: Campaign › 5. Mystery Base
