1. Summary

The experimental nuclear fusion reactor is one of the greatest technological achievements of the Schwarzwald research program. It stands in a heavily protected complex beside D3 and reached stable net power only through the reverse engineering of the Artifact, whose spacetime principles became its gravitational focusing system. Shut down in 1999 and preserved by automated systems, it powers the deeper installation again only if Edmund restores it, and even then its core cycles between three unstable states until it is stabilized.

2. Origin

The installation originally relied on conventional energy generation. As underground research expanded and increasingly sophisticated laboratories were constructed, its energy requirements exceeded the capabilities of the original infrastructure. The scientific leadership therefore authorized the construction of an experimental fusion reactor.

The complex was built after D3's original infrastructure, when the deepening research outgrew the conventional power supply.

2.1 Decades of Research

Fusion energy research was under way at Schwarzwald in 1976; one of its researchers counts twenty-three years of work on it by the 1999 shutdown. Scientists spent decades attempting to overcome the challenges associated with sustained fusion energy production.

2.2 The Artifact Breakthrough

The eventual solution involved insights derived from the reverse engineering of a mysterious Artifact, the non-human spacecraft recovered in 1977. The reactor reached stable net power only through that reverse engineering. Combined with other advances in reactor engineering, the gravitational focusing system allowed Schwarzwald to develop a functioning fusion power system.

3. Nature and Properties

The reactor occupies a heavily protected underground section beside D3, connected to the biomedical facilities through industrial access tunnels and security checkpoints; how the complex is reached is described with the place. The reactor sits in an immense chamber.

3.1 Gravitational Focusing System

Researchers studying the Artifact discovered principles involving the manipulation of local spacetime geometry. By studying the spacecraft's antigravity system, the researchers learned to deform local spacetime like a miniature black hole.

They adapted those principles into an artificial gravitational focusing system capable of precisely influencing the trajectories of high-energy laser beams. Its field bends the high-energy laser beams so that they converge on the fusion target in synchrony. The system improved the convergence and symmetry of the energy delivered to the fusion target.

This mechanism is speculative fictional technology inspired by real gravitational lensing and inertial-confinement fusion principles.

3.2 Reactor Intelligence and Automated Preservation

The reactor has been preserved by sophisticated artificial intelligence and automated maintenance systems powered by the facility's separate experimental battery infrastructure.

The reactor's specialized artificial intelligence conducts the automated activation once the necessary infrastructure has been restored and validated, and confirms electrical generation.

3.3 Supporting Systems

The reactor's restoration involves its restricted control room and primary control panel, its automated maintenance records and diagnostic interface, its accessible structural infrastructure, the thermal-management infrastructure of its cooling system, the fictional gravitational focusing and laser containment systems, the supporting electrical infrastructure required for its automated startup systems, and its final safety interlocks and control-system requirements. These are gameplay-level design categories, not operational instructions for a real nuclear facility.

3.4 The Three Unstable States

When the reactor is restarted, its artificial intelligence confirms electrical generation, but the core is not stabilized. From that moment the power cycles dynamically between three unstable states, and lighting and equipment fluctuate with it until the reactor is stabilized. The exact timing and local effects of the fluctuations are dynamic.

A sector's power outage and the reactor's instability are separate problems. Physical distribution repairs restore power locally, but the current then continues to fluctuate between the three reactor-power states; only access to the reactor's stabilization controls stabilizes the continuing fluctuations.

3.5 Stabilization

Amanda can connect to the reactor's stabilization controls if Edmund authorizes it. Once she stabilizes the reactor, most connected areas of the facility receive steady power.

What stays dark after stabilization, and what refusing it means for the rest of the game, belongs to the choice of Chapter Seven.

3.6 What the Reactor Powers

The fusion reactor is the advanced system intended to provide large-scale operational power to the deeper installation. In the deeper levels, lighting, computers and the elevators depend on the reactor and stay dark until it is restored; the elevators necessary to reach D4 cannot operate without it. In D5 it powered the lighting, computers and research systems until the 1999 evacuation.

A2 interfaces with the reactor and distributes its power, but holds no reactor of its own. Power from the reactor reaches a level only through that level's distribution network; in D4 a damaged distribution network keeps the level dark even after the reactor restarts.

4. History and Custody

The reactor powered the deeper installation from its first stable cycle until its shutdown in the 1999 evacuation.

4.1 The First Stable Cycle

After 1983, study of the spacecraft's antigravity system let the fusion researchers deform local spacetime; the resulting field synchronized the convergence of the lasers, and the reactor sustained its first stable fusion cycle with net power. The Fusion Energy Division recorded the success in its research log.

See: In-World Documents › Fusion Research Log

4.2 The Shutdown of 1999

During the 1999 evacuation the researchers were instructed to shut down the reactor and leave their work behind, because leaving a nuclear reactor running unattended was too dangerous. Their records describe their emotional response.

The abandonment of the reactor reinforces the scale of the 1999 catastrophe. Whatever happened was serious enough to justify leaving behind a technological achievement with extraordinary scientific and economic value. The facility's surviving high-value equipment and infrastructure, including its nuclear power systems, were not casually abandoned because they were unimportant; they remained inside precisely because the authorities judged renewed access and recovery to be too dangerous.

4.3 Preservation Since 1999

The nuclear fusion system has remained offline since 1999. Since then the reactor has been kept in a preserved state by its automated maintenance systems, running on the experimental battery system.

4.4 Permanent Destruction

An incorrect operation at a critical stage of the restart can irreversibly damage the reactor, with permanent consequences for the campaign. Not even Amanda can restore or stabilize it, and without the reactor the elevator toward D5 cannot run either.

See: Campaign › 6. Gates Of Hell

See: Systems › Persistent Consequences

5. Role in the Game

Restoring the reactor is the main mission of Chapter Six; what Edmund learns and does in it is described with the chapter.

The restart procedure is extremely demanding: an incorrect critical operation may permanently destroy the reactor's ability to generate power. A successful activation returns operational power to the underground installation and reactivates the elevators necessary to reach D4.

6. Open Questions

  • The exact date of the reactor's first stable fusion cycle remains to be defined.
  • The detailed reactor puzzles and the emergency route that follows a permanent reactor failure belong to the Chapter Six design.
